Supreme Court Hears Sunni Ittehad Council Seat Case Today

The Supreme Court will hear the reserved seats of the Sunni Ittehad Council case today.

A full court led by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa will hear it at 9:30 AM on Monday. According to its written reply submitted to the Supreme Court. The Election Commission has said that the Sunni Ittehad Council’s reservations are no longer valid.

It is pertinent to mention here that the apex court fixed two days for the last hearing: June 24 and June 25.

This case has become important as it deals with reserving reserved seats. Which is crucial for ensuring adequate representation in legislative assemblies. The political-religious organization known as Sunni Ittehad Council has contested the decision about their right to these positions.

The significance of this matter can be gauged from Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa’s involvement. The court often takes up cases having broader implications for the country’s polity. During its deliberations, the court will likely discuss different aspects related to distribution formulae used for allocating such quotas. And criteria applied while identifying beneficiaries.

According to the Election Commission’s written response position paper, SIC must still fulfill. The conditions necessary to qualify for those reserved categories. The hearing stage will scrutinize the validity of this view. The Supreme Court will examine the legal basis or procedural grounds that the Election Commission relied upon in making this determination through interpretation during its sittings.

On both dates (June 24th & 25th), counsel for SIC will try his level best to showcase continued entitlement through countering contentions put forward via the election commission regarding their eligibility status vis-à-vis reserved seats. This case carries weightage not only because its success would mean failure but also because other political parties rely on such provisions too; therefore outcome may alter nature if not shape politics forever.

All eyes from within/outside the political spectrum eagerly await. What will the Supreme Court do after today’s opening round on the case of the reserved seat involving the Sunni Ittehad Council? For instance, the full-court trial headed by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa reflects how seriously the judiciary takes this matter. Depending on the outcome of these hearings will either make or break chances for representation, among other things. The Pakistani Parliament specifically intends to serve people like them in the future.
