Relief Package: No Tariff Hike for Small Electricity Users

A big relief package is coming for users of 200 units of electricity. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has issued some important orders in this regard.

Relief Package Details

The government has decided to give respite to the protected consumers. In the upcoming budget, there is an expectation to introduce a new relief package for those who use up to 200 units. Sources said the government will subsidize Rs160 billion for those consuming up to 200 units.

Directives of the Prime Minister

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ordered that the tariff should not be increased for those using up to 200 units. He rejected the economic team’s suggestion to increase power rates for protected consumers.

Sources at PM’s office indicated that 20 million protected consumers would receive a subsidy on electricity rates. Moreover, electricity rates for these protected domestic consumers will not increase during the next fiscal year.

Larger Consumers Impact

Sources disclosed that, from the first month of the new financial year, the electricity tariff will rise for larger consumers. Who will continue getting a subsidy worth Rs160 billion until the end of the current fiscal year? They have been given because they are considered protected ones?

Government’s Concern towards Small Consumers

The government commits to keeping power rates for small customers at their current levels to reduce financial stress on people with low incomes. This will allow such families to plan better for their monthly budgets but still provide enough care for those who might need the most within our communities and cannot afford to pay high electricity bills throughout the year, especially during the winter season when heating becomes a must-have in every home even if people can’t afford it at some stages thereby stretching meager incomes further at already stretched thin households thus worsening living conditions over and above what we have now as a society in general.
