Ashrafi Calls for Judicial Reforms in Blasphemy Cases

Chairman of the Ulema Council Hafiz Tahir Mahmood Ashrafi has emphasized that the practice of being the plaintiff, judge. And executioner all at once must end. He urged the Chief Justice to set aside VIP and political cases for now. And focus on resolving blasphemy and Namoos-e-Risalat (sanctity of the Prophet) cases within three months. He advocated for punishing the guilty and releasing the innocent promptly.

Addressing a press conference at the Lahore Press Club with fellow scholars. Ashrafi brought attention to a recent incident in Swat. Where an individual was burned alive under the pretext of disrespecting the Quran.

He condemned such actions, stating they tarnish the image of Pakistan and Islam. He advocated for ending terrorism and extremism since they contribute to the negative reputation of the country.

Regarding the Hajj, he agreed that this year, there had been some changes in the system. But said that the Saudi government had done commendably in managing the situation, given how hot it was. He stated that most people who died during the Hajj were those who attempted to perform it illegally. He promised to address all injustices faced by pilgrims accordingly.

Ashrafi also discussed what happened on May 9th, expressing his disappointment over the lack of justice. Wondered how a commoner could expect justice even when the state denied it. He emphasized the need to address the shortage of police personnel and eliminate biases within the judiciary. He stated that camera footage showed arsonists were responsible for the attack on May 9th; therefore, authorities should ensure accountability.

Ashraf’s remarks highlight three areas needing urgent action: judicial reforms, proper handling of blasphemy cases. And a strong stand against extremism and terrorism.
By calling an end to vigilante justice practices. He brings out one key problem in ensuring justice and upholding the rule of law in Pakistan.
