Extreme conditions of monsoon season coupled with post-flooding scenarios have caused havoc across the province of Sindh. Particularly pronounced has been the increase of water in Manchhar Lake which now endangers the residents of the Jhangoara area of Sehwan City. The increasing volume of this lake has also resulted in the inundation of the connecting roads, thus isolating some of the villages therefore worsening the condition of the people living there more and more.
Monsoon Leads to Calamity in Sindh More than Word Can Describe
Heavy and continuous rains have swept across various parts of Sindh, causing widespread destruction. The downpour has brought down most of the buildings and devastated unprecedented amounts of farmland, leaving affected people stranded and without protection. Daily life too was impossible because of the unrelenting rains for example very many people have experienced such challenges.
Areas Underwater and Relief Warded Off Peoples
In places such as Hyderabad, Thatta, Sujawal, Mirpur Khas, and Tharparkar areas, the waters of the floods do not recede to the relief of the people, rather they worsen the situation of the people. Such is the degree in Dadu where transportation has been hindered by a lack of road networks such that the residents have no option but to use boats. Such water retention has not only damaged the available facilities in these areas but has also made it difficult for the ONR to operate to help the people at the base level.
Impact of Manchhar Lake Flooding on Jhangoara
The high rise of water in Manchhar Lake has begun to disturb the vicinity of Sehwan, in particular, Jhangoara. Floods have destroyed linking roads which have completely closed off many villages from the rest of the country. Given the current level of water, Dharma remains short-tempered as these people risk suffering more damage if the water goes any higher. Those victims are in severe conditions and need immediate help as water is closing on their homes and places of work.
Damage to Infrastructure and Homes
Apart from the waterlogging in and around Manchahr Lake, the other parts of Sindh have also experienced floods. Floodwaters have inundated the Kachho-Johi main road which is a lifeline to many services and supplies. Heavy rains in the Golarchi tehsil of Badeen have led to the destruction of mud houses and roads thereby adding to the hardships of the population.
Government’s Response and Ongoing Challenges
The plight of the population suffering from acute flooding of Sujawal and other areas of the Sindh province has caught the attention of Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah. He has tracked the situation and forthwith ordered the local authorities to take action to assist in efficiently removing any water caused by the flooding. This will pose great challenges due to the continuous rain and flooding, making it hard to solve the flooding problems.
Most parts of Sindh remain adverse and many areas including Sujawal are recovering from flooding. The important populations are in vast need of assistance and rehabilitation if their lives and economic viability after such catastrophic natural disasters are to be salvaged.
