Woman and Niece Trapped in Room Over Property Dispute

A man in Hyderabad locked his sister and niece in a room before blocking the door with bricks over a property dispute, according to police. An officer reported that the widow’s brother-in-law locked her and her niece inside during a property ownership dispute. They remained trapped for about nine hours before the mother and daughter called emergency services on 15. Police broke through a wall to free them at Latifabad No5 in the southern Indian city. This is another chilling example from India of how far some people are prepared to go in their quest for land or other assets. It also shows both legal loopholes around women’s rights -particularly those who have lost their husbands- as well systemic weaknesses within society at large towards protecting such vulnerable groups against abuses perpetrated during disputes over these very same resources. Their uncle kept a woman and her niece captive, sealing them in a room under a claim of ownership rights from an agreement. Fortunately, they sent an SOS message via mobile phone, prompting police officers to break open the wall and rescue the two victims unharmed immediately.

Meanwhile, following this appalling act committed against innocent souls, Tasleem Jahan (complainant) has registered FIR number B under section 377 IPC against unknown accused persons. Local authorities have detained two suspects in an ongoing investigation, actively pursuing justice throughout the day.
