US Urges Pakistan to Uphold Rights Amid Election Debate

As the US Congress resolution on Pakistan’s electoral process continues to be debated, a US spokesman has called on Pakistan to respect human rights and stressed fundamental freedoms as well as the integrity of the election system; this American pressure reflects its concern with – and raises issues about – Pakistan in a particular way.

Key Points:

US Concerns And Timing: The US has voiced its worries at a crucial time when China has emerged as an economic saviour for Pakistan.  This was evident from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Beijing and the signing of various agreements there, which indicate Chinese interest in strengthening the Pakistani economy. Therefore, what alarms America is that why now? Why did they wait until we started leaning more towards China?

Political Nature Of The Resolution: Politically influential but non-binding, like many resolutions passed by Pakistani legislative bodies, congress resolutions are also political. Lobbying firms had a big hand in securing its passage with substantial financial muscle, particularly from PTI supporters in America.

Pakistan’s Stance: Despite appearances, Pakistan’s political and military leadership seems united on prioritizing economic decisions in their foreign policy, with an apparent inclination towards China. Although there is no overt opposition to the U.S. from Pakistan’s elected leadership, the preference for China is evident. Pakistan is unwilling to succumb to U.S. pressure, as evidenced by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar’s bold opposition to the U.S. resolution, announcing plans to bring a counter-resolution.

Lack of Unified Response: While the government shows no signs of retreating from its position on the U.S. resolution, the opposition party, PTI, celebrates and expresses joy. This makes the idea of a unified national response to the U.S. resolution a mere dream. PTI is likely to leverage the resolution further against the government.

The U.S. resolution and the subsequent reactions underscore the complex geopolitical dynamics at play, with Pakistan navigating its path between U.S. pressures and Chinese support. The lack of solidarity among Pakistani political factions indicates internal divisions that could influence the country’s response to external pressures.
