US Personnel Injured in Rocket Attack on Iraq Airbase

According to CBS News, security sources indicated that two Katyusha rockets were fired at the base, with one landing inside. The Department of Defence confirmed the suspected rocket attack against US and Coalition forces at Al Asad Airbase. A spokesperson noted that initial reports suggested several US personnel were injured and that a post-attack damage assessment was underway. A senior US military official stated that no critical injuries. Such as loss of limbs, were reported. And no service members were killed.

Presidential Briefing and Response US

President Joe Biden was briefed on the suspected attack. In a statement on X, he mentioned that he and Vice President Kamala Harris were updated in the Situation Room on Middle East developments, threats from Iran and its proxies, diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions, and preparations to support Israel if attacked. The president emphasized that the US is taking steps to defend its forces and respond to any attacks on its personnel.

Context of the Attack US

This assault follows a Unite state strike in Iraq last week, which was defined as an act of self-defense against militants preparing to launch drones in opposition to US and coalition forces. Tensions have been escalating because of the loss of life of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in Tehran last Wednesday. The IRGC accused Israel, with US support, of Haniyeh’s death. Israel has not commented. Additionally, Israel said killing a top Hezbollah commander in Beirut, which brought about threats of retaliation from both Iran and Hezbollah.

Historical Significance of Al Asad Airbase

The Al Asad base has a history of being centered by Iranian-backed militias. In January, the base changed into attacked with ballistic missiles and rockets, most of which were intercepted. US Central Command suggested that numerous United State employees were assessed for demanding brain injuries after that attack. And at least one Iraqi provider member became wounded. The USA has used the airbase since 2004 and has been visited by former Presidents George W. Bush and Donald Trump.
