UN Demands Probe into Shooting of Aysenur Ezgi Eygi

 

The UN has called for a tougher inquiry surrounding the murder of Aysenur Ezgi Eygi. A 26-year-old dual American and Turkish national. Israeli troops shot Aysenur Ezgi Eygi during an anti-occupation protest in the occupied West Bank on Friday. The incident occurred at a weekly sit-in against the expansion of illegal settlements in Beita, a town near Nablus.

Israel’s Response UN 

The Israeli Defense Forces also issued a statement. Noting that “the facts or the specifics regarding the identity of the shooter or the reason for the shot fired at the area. Where the foreign national was present are being looked into.” Two Foreign Affairs officers were able to address the matter. Reports indicated that someone shot a foreign national in the area. An eyewitness told the Newshour that two shots were fired during the demonstration.

UN and US Reactions

UN Deputy Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric asserted that the incident requires an investigation. He emphasized that authorities must always protect civilians and hold those responsible accountable. The U.S. government also expressed a certain concern. National Security Council representative Sean Savett expressed Washington’s deep disturbance over Eygi’s death and requested more information and an investigation from Israeli authorities.

Eyewitness Accounts.

Medics were seen carrying Eygi towards a waiting ambulance after the shooting in the footage. Jonathan Pollak is an Anti-occupation Jewish-Israeli activist who was present at the protest and reported Israeli forces shooting from a building and two shots followed. A comrade of the protest directed Anton in a cry for help uttered in English and noticed Eygi bleeding from head under the olive tree. Pollak attempted to pack the wound asking others for a clean scarf and registered a shallow pulse before paramedics whisked her off to the emergency room.

First Protest for Eygi

Eygi had apparently joined the protest for the first time in the course of the International Solidarity Movement pro Palestinian organization. She was taken to Rafidia Hospital in Nablus, but she was already dead. A head gunshot wound was the cause of death according to the report. Dr Fouad Nafaa head of the hospital validated the report.

International Reactions

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said it was with great sorrow that he commented on ‘the tragic loss.’ While condemning Israeli action as “barbaric” Turkey President Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdogan made his remarks. Keith Ellison who is Turkey’s foreign ministry reported Eygi was shot by Israeli troops.

Eygi’s Background UN 

Eygi, who hails from Antalya, Turkey, recently finished studying at the University of Washington in Seattle. While sharing his condolence for her death, President of the University Ana Mari Cauce, referred to Eygi as a “one of the bright students” among her classmates.

IDF’s Statement

In its statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) included a detail that Israeli soldiers fired at a Obose ati Kauffman. Authorities identified him as the ‘main instigator’ of violent action because he posed a danger by throwing rocks. The IDF is looking into the particulars of Eygi’s demise.
