Trust and Turbulence | Fazlur Rahman on Pakistan Elections

 

Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Ali Amin Gandapur, emphasized the importance of trust in the Apex Committee’s policy discussions but clarified that no mention of any operation was made. He expressed readiness to meet with the Army Chief and the DG ISI after he met with Prime Minister Imran Khan outside Adiala Jail. Gandapur highlighted that the discussion in the Apex Committee centered around peace and security, with talks of incentives under the banner of ‘Operation Azm-e-Istehkam.’ Fazlur Rahman, a key figure, endorsed the need for cohesive efforts

Regarding the operation, he stressed the need for clarity from the IG Police before determining the specifics of its scale. He underscored the necessity for stakeholders’ trust, as his government has strengthened all law-enforcement agencies, including the CTD. Gandapur also mentioned that former Afghan President Ashraf Ghani’s government antagonized them during their tenure. He recounted the removal of General (Retd.) After a tenure of three years, Faiz from Afghanistan alleges that General (Retd.) Bajwa removed him despite earlier endorsement as the best Army Chief candidate.

Operation Updates: IG Police Clarity, Afghanistan Talks

In regards to Operation Azm-e-Istehkam. He highlighted that until the IG Police provides clarity on its size, stakeholders, including the public and provinces, must maintain confidence. Gandapur expressed dissatisfaction with Bilawal Bhutto’s global tours. Arguing that the matter of Afghanistan needed to be addressed due to a lack of dialogue. He advocated for talks with Afghanistan, lamenting the absence of negotiations with governmental agencies or the federal government. Gandapur pointed out that conditions for talks should include the return of mandates and the formation of a commission on May 9th.

Moreover, Gandapur rejected allegations against him and indicated his willingness to meet with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi for discussion. He warned that they would escalate their reaction if federal demands were not met. Gandapur further criticized the operation, suggesting that instead of ensuring stability, it could lead to further instability. He criticized the government’s insensitivity towards its people and warned against adopting hostile attitudes towards them akin to their enemies. Gandapur stressed the importance of presenting a united front in the country and avoiding divisions.

Gandapur emphasized the need for political consultation and respect for alliances formed, underscoring the importance of mutual respect, Fazlur Rahman. He spoke against relying on external forces and suggested peace and economics. Political stability could only be achieved through governments formed based on public opinion.
