The Plucky Squire combines a unique fusion of insights by letting the player take on the character Jot, embarking on a mission to redeem the Land of Mojo from the clutches of the evil wizard Humgrump’s management. This only occurs when the storyline advances to the 3D part that takes place outside the storybook, where many household items are used for evasion instead. This is in light of classic games like The Legend of Zelda and as most indie persons have received this title as a well-deserved praise with the same people appreciating the uniqueness of it.
James Turner’s Journey to Game Development
Renowned for being one of the leading game designers for the title game, James Turners’s career promotes fairytales. Born in the UK, the adventure began here but some holiday in Japan led to work as a sponso or more appropriately a researcher for the Pokémon videogame company – Genius Sonority without speaking Japanese. As so often happens he managed to find jobs for art work for about 20 titles including Pokémon games and was finally promoted to become art supervisor of Pokémon Sword and Shield. Unfortunately, he got bored of working on someone else’s ideas so he returned to the UK and together with Jonathan Biddle started a new company All Possible Futures.
The Inspiration Behind The Plucky Squire
According to James, he got the concept of The Plucky Squire from picture book stories. Which he used to read to his son. He had a vision for a game in which every page would feature something to take the player by surprise. Which eventually formed the idea of allowing the character to step into a 3D space after a 2-dimensional drawing. This was a concept that was embraced by both the creators and the public. When the game was first showcased in the summer game fest 2022.
The Challenges of Development and Delays
As the anticipation for The Plucky Squire increased so did the pressure to live up to that excitement. In order to ensure that the game lived up to such high expectations. The team resolved to postpone the launch of the game. Which was expected in 2023. This culminated in hard talks with the publisher Devolver Digital. But Turner did not budge. And was determined to make quality. This, coupled with the logistics of working remotely from different areas of the world, provided challenges to the team; however. They have been able to make the project work. As the focus was always on creating a memorable experience.
