The US country of Texas Preps is bracing itself for Hurricane Beryl, which has re-bolstered and is probable to deliver adverse winds, typhoon surges, and heavy rain. According to the National Hurricane Center, Beryl is expected to make landfall early on Monday.
Forecast and Warnings
Forecasts suggest that Beryl will deliver up to ten inches (25cm) of rain and cause significant energy outages. The typhoon is expected to hit between Galveston and Corpus Christi, probable attaining Category 2 with sustained winds of up to 110 mph (177km/h).
Preparation
Major ports in Texas, including Corpus Christi, Houston, Galveston, Freeport, and Texas City, have closed before the typhoon. Residents were warned of enormous electricity outages, and over 1,000,000 Texans are under a storm warning.
Earlier Impact/Current Threat
Before reaching Texas, Beryl killed at least ten people in the Caribbean, then weakened into a tropical storm after hitting Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. However, its remnants still pose a significant danger to Texas Preps.
Anticipated Landfall
Authorities said even though it may not be as strong as when it was in the Caribbean Sea basin area but warn that there could still be considerable impacts across parts of south-central and southeastern sections of this state where hurricanes are rare during July, such as the Houston area too significantly if they would exceed their limits for sheltering those who need protection against hazards from hurricanes extended inland northward through central areas toward Austin metro region. Still, they, most importantly, urged residents throughout these regions to remain prepared since hazardous conditions will continue through Monday.
Official Statements/Evacuations
Acting Governor Dan Patrick stressed severity, saying that no one should take lightly any warnings given by officials. Meanwhile, Refugio County issued mandatory evacuations, citing narrow-scope emergency services among other factors related to the weakened infrastructure caused by last year’s Hurricane Harvey.
Emergency Responders
Over 2000 emergency responders, including members from the Texas National Guard, are on standby to deal with the aftermath. AccuWeather’s Unprecedented History also mentioned rare events like hurricanes hitting Texas in July.
Exceptional Strength
Hurricane Beryl was an extraordinary storm, becoming the earliest Category Five hurricane in record books. It caused severe damage mainly across St Vincent and the Grenadines, Mayreau and Union, Grenada, Jamaica, and other islands through the Caribbean Sea basin area.
Mexico Impact
Beryl brought heavy rainfall over southern Mexico, including Cancún and Tulum. This resulted in blackouts and uprooted trees, but no significant destruction has occurred.
Climate Factors/Future Outlook
Climate Change Contribution
While attributing particular weather events to climate change remains difficult, it is worth noting that unusually high sea surface temperatures played a part in intensifying this particular system. Moreover, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts the North Atlantic could witness up to seven major hurricanes this season, compared to the average of three.
