Supreme Court Faces Record Backlog with 59,000 Cases

 

This historical high is considered to be the highest peak in the backlog of cases that have ever occurred. The very first time in the history of our country when it went beyond 59000.

Supreme Court Performance Report Supreme Court

The performance report for the Supreme Court covering period beginning December 17. 2023 and ending on March, 31, 2024 has been released. It ensured that all court sessions were open to public interest as it broadcasted judicial proceedings live on about thirty occasions. This was according to the reports. It also initiated a precedent. Which made it impracticable for judges to resign and thus avoid accountability.

Key Decisions and Actions Supreme Court

During this time frame, negative actions were taken by Supreme Court against Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui depriving him of his right to fair trial. Moreover, a judgment was passed regarding Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Reference that put an end to life disqualification judgments as well as prolonged special courts’ decision against Pervez Musharraf. While one such ruling held that divorce (khula) must require consent of wife before being granted. In total 5427 new cases were registered during this period.

Human Interest Details

Accordingly, Chief Justice Pakistan had two pairs of peacocks at his official residence which needed veterinary treatment. After taking care of them, white peacock pair was handed over by them back to Wildlife Department while Colorful peacock pair was sent back by them into Peacock Valley located at Kallar Kahar.

The significant increase in pendency reflects urgent need for judicial reforms aimed at enhancing efficiency within Supreme Court. On top of delaying justice; backlog also results in public loss of confidence towards judiciary system thereby undermining its trustworthiness. Prudent handling thereof will ensure timely dispensation of justice and rule of law maintenance within Pakistan as it is highly imperative.
