Political parties agreed to raise the number of Supreme Court judges in a meeting organized by the Senate Standing Committee on Law and Justice. Nevertheless, until they sat down together again, the committee shelved the bill on increasing judges.
Meeting Information Senate
The committee sought information from the office of the Registrar Supreme Court about pending cases. And vacant positions for High Court judges from the Ministry of Law. Senator Farooq Naek chaired this Senate Standing Committee meeting. Which was held at Parliament House.
Remarks by Officials Senate
Senator Farooq Naek said during this meeting that . The matter regarding the increase in the number of supreme courts shall be decided once the ministry provides necessary details required under law and justice.” He stressed that they would also determine an adequate number for their establishment. The Supreme Court has 17 judges. Which is still the same despite rising caseloads. According to Mr.Farooq Naek, 21 should be added.
Comment From Law Minister
Mr.Azam Nazeer Tarar (Law minister) proposed, “before we engage into any further discussion, let’s start by reviewing these cases concerning their details from the Registrar’s OfficeS.C.t SC itself.” He added that up to 24 judgeships within SC may require a SC.
Delaying Legislation
Because more information is needed, The Senate Standing Committee on Law and Justice postponed its move or action over bringing more justices into the highest courts until it sits again next week. This will enable them to have a holistic look into the current workload vis-a-vis the increased need for efficiency through the additionality of human resources in form judgeships, especially if such caseloads are here often or expected frequently in the future, too.
