Pakistan’s UN Engagement: No Biden Meeting Scheduled

During the interview, he was pretty definitive on the geographical and geopolitical context, which, he argues, binds Pakistan’s UN and its neighbors, particularly Afghanistan. He noted, “Geography cannot be changed,” adding that there is no alternative for Pakistan save to accepting abnormal relations with its neighbors and solving all the problems emanating from it. In his view, though the Afghan Taliban has firmly cut off many of the Taliban’s policies, it is essential to have diplomatic relations with the Taliban government for a long-term order in the region.

“Our Connection is with The Afghan People”

Akram called attention to the Afghan government and the people, emphasizing that Pakistan has been and continues to be engaged with the Afghan population, not the Afghan government. Not neglecting the recent history and the existing challenges with the Taliban regime, Pakistan’s objective is, however, to look after the Afghan people who have been suffering from economic crises, political turmoil, and insecurity.

Afghanistan and Regional Stability Pakistan’s UN

According to Akram, Pakistan is trying to engage with the Taliban and the present government of Afghanistan. He clarified that Pakistan has taken the required actions to protect itself but has also maintained some channels with Afghanistan.

This initiative aims to combat common threats faced by both countries, including armed insurgencies and terrorism, which ignore the borders between Pakistan and Afghanistan.”

He acknowledged that “differences” cannot simply disappear but urged for transforming such antagonism: “We are actively working to resolve these differences through diplomacy

” Akram emphasized such differences should not prevent engagement on these matters, even when the implementation strategy remains a divisive policy issue. Political leadership in Pakistan appreciates the fact that stability in Afghanistan is perhaps the most significant goal for the whole region.

Pakistan’s Diplomatic Efforts and Stance on Afghan Assets Pakistan’s UN

When asked about Pakistan’s broader diplomatic initiatives, Akram asserted confidently that it will always be necessary to resort to the idea of engaging in other more expansive diplomatic frontiers, particularly in Afghanistan. Pakistan maintains its position on the release of the frozen assets of Afghanistan. Akram appealed to the governments of other countries absconding these frozen assets, mainly the US, to take action and unfreeze the account of the Afghan central bank, which returned to power the Taliban rule.

Aside from the frozen assets possession principle, Akram was also optimistic about Pakistan’s quest to correct the wrongs done by the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. As Pakistan helps the Afghan people in the process of economic recovery and peacebuilding in the country, it also encourages the Taliban to change their policies to be more moderate to comply with legitimate international concerns, including the issues of human rights and women’s rights.

Pakistan’s Extended view and Action plan towards Afghanistan

When winding up the interview, Munir Akram explained once again that there is no change to Pakistan’s policy of engagement with Afghanistan. This policy seeks to redeploy Pakistan’s security concerns and humanitarian considerations by averting any further confrontation with the Taliban administration. Akram made it clear that Afghan support, which Pakistan commits, will not change the business-as-usual approach where the country’s national interests are concerned.

He explained that Pakistan’s view of Afghanistan is not only a response but a strategy and that there is a long-term view of promoting peace and stability in the region. “Our policy on Afghanistan will remain unchanged,” Akram infers this more focused stance on policy Liaison with the Afghan government.
