Lee Valley Velodrome Installs New Safety Barrier

 

The Lee Valley VeloPark Velodrome is set to enhance safety measures following a dramatic crash during the 2022 Commonwealth Games. A new Perspex barrier will be installed to prevent similar incidents.

During a high-speed collision, several riders, including England’s Matt Walls, were involved in a severe crash. Walls were catapulted over the trackside and into the crowd, causing injuries to cyclists and spectators alike.

The incident requires action from famed cyclists like Sir Chris Hoy and Dame Laura Kenny, who emphasized the need for more advantageous safety at velodromes.

Installation of the New Barrier

The Lee Valley Velodrome will quickly function as a 1. A four-meter-excessive barrier across the track, costing £250,000, is also installed. This installation is a pioneering move in the UK and is the most effective third of its kind globally to be retrofitted into a present velodrome.

In designing the new barrier, Lee Valley consulted with the Union Cycliste Internationale (UC cycling’s world governing body. The goal is to boost safety for riders and spectators while maintaining clear visibility for fans.

The barrier is part of a broader £750,000 improvement plan at Lee Valley VeloPark, which is expected to be completed by the end of August. These upgrades aim to elevate the venue’s usual experience and safety requirements.

Injuries and Recovery Post-Crash

The crash saw cyclists like Walls, the Isle Man’s Matt Bostock, and Canada’s Derek Gee hospitalized. Fortunately, none sustained significant injuries, though one spectator required surgery for a severe arm injury.
