Lael Wilcox Breaks Women’s World Cycling Record

 

Lael Wilcox, an American ultra-distance cyclist. Has managed to create a new world record for fast circuit around the globe for women. It took Wilcox 108 days, 12 hours. And 12 minutes to finish the trip where the total distance was nearly 29,170 kilometers or 18,125 miles. She however broke Graham’s record in Chicago. USA where she commenced and finished her record trip in 124 days in 2018, held by Graham, Jenny of Scotland.

A Journey That Crosses Four Continents Lael Wilcox 

Aged 38, Alaska native Wilcox hatched an idea to ride around the globe on May 28. While in other continents as she cycled in doing this, she cycled in the space of about 14 hours every day for 21 countries. Guinness Book of World Records is anticipated to verify her this record. Yet, in these activities, along with tremendous corporeal abilities, particularly great mental endurance was necessary to achieve results. ‘She runs, almost always returning to the extreme efforts on whatever projects she is working on,’ said Anne-Marije Rook, editor of North America at Cycling Weekly.

Wilcox’s trip originated in Chicago, she reached New York and took a flight to Portugal next. After that, she went through most of Europe including Germany and Turkey before reaching Australia. After that, she biked from Perth to Brisbane and flew to New Zealand. And finally, from her home town Anchorage on the Alaskan coast down the West Coast of the US to Los Angeles and back to Chicago along Route 66.

Wilcox’s achievement has received positive feedback from Jenny Graham, the previous record synthesizer who pointed out: “It’s really fascinating to be seeing women doing everything to advance their sport as they honestly wish.” Wilcox’s odyssey has served as a motivation to many regarding opportunities that can be gotten by women in sport. Rook stressed the point that Wilcox and Graham are breaking grounds not only in cycling but in women’s sports in general.

Competition on the Horizon

Wilcox’s record may soon face competition. Indian ultra-cyclist Vedangi Kulkarni is currently attempting to complete a similar ride in 110 days, already 65 days and 7,700 km into her journey.
