The hunt for Joseph Couch – a 32-year-old man from Kentucky Highway – has stunned and terrified his neighbors and the surrounding community. Couch fired ten shots at five individuals on Interstate 75 for no reason. Couch has been behaving strangely in the past but now finds himself at the end of a multi- agency cross manhunt as authorities search the thousands of hinterlands in southeastern Kentucky.
Kentucky Highway Shooting: History of Confrontation and Threats
Couch’s neighbors were worried about his disturbing behavior long before. One of the neighbors recalls an event from February in which ‘Couch, brandishing an assault weapon, pointed an AR – 15 fitted with bullets at his person and his nine-year old child. They had a minor fight’. In n recent development, there were reports of Couch attempting to nab the family dog and when he failed, he picked up a stone and threw it at the occupants of the household. The angry neighbor reported the case to the police however the prosecutor dropped the case as the witness was a no show in court. “They dismissed it because they never notified me of a court date,” said the neighbor, annoyed that they took that much time before seizing Couch’s guns.
The other neighbors noticed something wasn’t right too. Donald Causey, who earlier on got along well with Couch, recounted how it all changed particularly this year. At one point, Couch told Causey that he would shoot him with a rifle since he was standing close to his house. Following the I-75 shootings, Causey who was reluctant to call the cops at first, wished he had done something sooner to prevent such incidents.
Piling on the Pressure – or Maybe not Escalating Mental Illness Issues
Couch has been behaving weirdly and his neighbors have observed such awkward changes for a few months now. Causey recounted, one of the most troubling moments was looking out the window and seeing Couch marching around his own house, clutching the rifle. “There’s something wrong with this guy since the first 15 second stimulation,” said Causey about Couch who seems to have found trouble mentally.
The Event That Occurred While Sitting on I75
On the fateful I-75 shooting incident, through text messages, the couch had some provoking messages such as, “I’m going to kill a lot of people. Well, try at least.” Reports indicate that Couch shot at five people, who became his random victims. He then ventured into the deep wilds of southeastern Kentucky, prompting a manhunt in the dense Daniel Boone Forest.
Community in Shock and Fear
People are still scared, and this includes the community. The police are actively pursuing Couch and have even announced that they will reward $25,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to Couch’s arrest. Couch’s dangerous behavior serves well as the case in point for such people.
Despite all the resources and manpower that law enforcement had deployed, Couch managed to evade capture and then proceeded to unleash a reign of terror.
