Mumbai: Just days before it’s miles set to hit theatres, the film Kangana’s directed by and starring Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut, faces a criminal project for its alleged portrayal of the Sikh community.
Legal Action Taken to Halt the Release
According to reviews in Indian media, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). A Sikh religious frame, along with the Akal Takht, has demanded an immediate ban on the film “Emergency.” The organizations claim that it defames Sikhs and tries to create a negative narrative about them.
The SGPC and Akal Takht argue that not only does the film misrepresent Sikhs, but it also hurts their image and dignity. They believe such movies propagate harmful stereotypes while showing biased views that are likely to cause communal tension.
SGPC’s Stance on the Film
During a press conference, SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami expressed deep concern over how this movie represents his community. He said Indian cinema repeatedly misrepresents Sikhs, which always hurts their sentiments. According to him, there is nothing new in Emergency as every other flick shows them negatively, reinforcing wrong beliefs about who they are.
Dhami accused the Censor Board Of India of biasing against Sikhism, saying previous works should have protected the interests of Sikhs better while including more members from among them so that future certifications may reflect fairness towards these people’s feelings too.
Akal Takht’s Objections
Ragbir Singh, a spokesperson for Akal Takht, voiced strong objections, claiming that the film depicts Sikhism as separatist. Which he believes is part of a “deep conspiracy” aimed at spoiling the community’s image. He added that such portrayals were dangerous because they could fuel misconceptions that led others to think ill about anyone belonging here. Even though our religions teach us otherwise, we should always live together peacefully, irrespective of whether someone holds different views from ours, which might sometimes seem divisive.
Singh also drew attention to the fact that portraying Sikhsim as separatists could have severe consequences because people may begin holding unjustified grudges against all members of this faith dwelling within wider society; therefore, authorities must act urgently to prevent such movies from being shown. Otherwise, it risks causing disharmony while negatively impacting dignity.
