Sources say the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has stopped its anti-encroachment operation after the assurance of Shibli Faraz, the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate. Heavy machinery-equipped CDA officials reached Shibli Faraz’s house to remove alleged encroachments. However, Shibli Faraz told them his property had no encroachment, so the operation was postponed.
In a subsequent statement, Shibli Faraz also clarified that he installed the fence to protect against pigs and snakes, not for wrongful purposes. He expressed anger, questioning why others were concocting allegations against him when there was no corruption case. This incident has raised significant concerns and debates within the Senate.
Meanwhile, the Senate Chairman directed that they present a report today (Tuesday) after raising the issue in the House. Both government and opposition members urged the Chairman to take stringent notice of the situation. On the point of order, Senator Saifullah Abro mentioned that Shibli Faraz’s house is quite old, implying that the accusations of encroachment might be unfounded.
Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar stated that he would obtain a report from the Ministry of Interior and the Chief Commissioner, pledging to inform the House of the findings today (Tuesday). He assured that the investigation would clarify whether Shibli Faraz had made any encroachments. Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani noted that the Law Minister had requested time until today (Tuesday) to gather and present the report, which he believed would shed light on the entire situation.
Another prominent Senator, Sherry Rehman, remarked that Shibli Faraz has been residing at the same location for the past fifteen years. He was questioning why the issue had suddenly emerged. She expressed concern that the incident damaged the House’s privilege and integrity. Rehman said that the dignity of parliament needs a transparent and thorough investigation. Irfan Siddiqui, the Pakistan Muslim League(N) leader in parliament, condemned the incident. According to him, this kind of strategy doesn’t help anybody but gives rise to avoidable controversies. Siddiqui called for the Privileges Committee to address the matter. He emphasized the importance of addressing the issue through proper parliamentary channels to ensure justice and maintain decorum.
The broader implications of this incident highlight the ongoing tension between government authorities and opposition members. It underscores the need for clear regulations and transparent processes to handle such allegations and operations. Based on Shibli Faraz’s assurances, the CDA’s decision to halt the operation indicates a possible lack of concrete evidence. Which will hopefully be clarified in the forthcoming report.
As the Senate awaits the detailed report, the incident continues to generate discussion among political circles and the public. It questions the motives behind such operations and the safeguards to protect individuals from unjust accusations. The outcome of this research will likely have important implications for future conduct and the relationship. Between the CDA and residents of Islamabad, particularly those in prominent political positions.
