Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Nasser Kanaani, has said that Iran right to protect its security and national territorial integrity is based on the United Nations Charter. During a weekly briefing, Kanaani clarified that it was ridiculous to appeal to Iran for restraint. He underscored that Iran’s position is based on international norms and considers its defence actions legitimate.
Iran’s Support for Gaza Ceasefire
The spokesperson also clarified Iran’s stand on the Gaza ceasefire does not relate to how they responded to Israel. Repeating his country’s support of ceasefires in Gaza, he noted that the ongoing crisis has claimed many lives over the past ten months. As an international imperative towards ending violence, Iran supports a ceasefire in Gaza. Iran remains a key global supporter of efforts to end the fighting in Gaza.
Allegations of Terrorist Attacks
Nasser addressed accusations against Israel, claiming they targeted Ismail Haniyeh, an influential Hamas political leader, during cease-fire talks in Tehran. Haniyeh, who was leading political negotiations for a truce with Gaza, reportedly suffered a terrorist attack whilst he was physically inside Iranian territory. Such incidents will highlight tensions and complexities within regional conflicts with which the Iranian government seeks to show its commitment to supporting peaceful processes through which resolution of the Gaza crisis can be achieved.
Iran’s Right to Self-Defense
Kanaani reemphasized Iran’s position on defending its security and territorial integrity according to the UN Charter.” It is unfair to ask Iran not to respond when it fears threats to itself. “He stressed that Iran’s right of self-defence shows where the country stands regarding preserving its sovereignty and protecting itself amid ongoing regional tensions.
However, while asserting that it would defend itself against any aggression directed at its national security, the Iranian Foreign Ministry showed its respect for international principles. The spokesman’s comments also indicate that Iran still supports peace in the Gaza Strip and agrees with the complicated nature of conflicts faced by individual states in the region. Therefore, to strengthen its commitment to regional integrity and international peace support, it has responded to terrorism allegations while justifying its self-defence.
