Challenging mountaineers across the centuries, Mount Everest has consistently risen to establish and retain its position as the tallest mountain ever recorded, at a precarious height of 8848 meters above sea level. The question remains: Will it always be the tallest area in the world, and if so, how many more feet will it grow?
Grand Expedition of Mount EverestÂ
In April 2019, Aurora Elmore, a Geologist and then the senior program manager at the National Geographic Society, prepared to go to Everest’s South Base Camp in Nepal, but this time not the traditional 12-day hiking route -but in a helicopter. She was filling her helicopter with supplies for scientists working on the world’s highest mountain on a project that looked into the impact of climate change on the environment. As the weather was obvious, she could ultimately completely see the entire Hindu Kush Himalaya range.
Impact of Global Warming on Everest’s EnvironmentÂ
Elmore was based on the National Geographic and Rolex project, which examined the impact of climate change in the region. Elmore was surprised to see such a view when he flew above the top of Everest. Everest Base Camp, which sits at a height of more than 5km (3 miles) above sea level, looked like a town with green and yellow tents. These domes housed climbers who arrived at the mountain each spring, aiming to reach the peak of the world. With the help of the climbers who come each season, Everest grows a little bit higher into the sky.
What is the maximum height possible for Mount Everest?
Mount Everest, along with the rest of the Himalayas, rises slightly each year due to the ongoing tectonic collision between the Indo-Australian and Eurasian plates. This raises an interesting question: how high can Mount Everest grow? St. Helen or Mount Fuji is not comparable to Olympus Mons in the other tray. There is no possibility of such growth on this planet.
Every additional mountain has a section—the internal spiral that resists as long as possible until it is affected by other obstacles. And while Everest goes on its painful and gradual weighting and slow growth, there are elements in nature that would eventually stop the rise of Everest. Because the forces that currently serve to carry and push Everest upwards will retire as tectonic activity exposure decreases, there shall be other activities – erosion that will blow away the majority of the height. Although Everest continues to grow for now, understanding how tall it will ultimately become depends on knowing how these opposing forces will balance over time.
