Heavy Monsoon Rains Forecast for Punjab: Aug 9-12

 

The Department of Heavy Monsoon Rainshas announced that monsoon rains will occur in Punjab from August 9th to August 12th. During this time, heavy downpours, strong winds, and thunderstorms will occur across various parts of the province and other areas in Pakistan. Flash floods are possible, so it is essential for people living near rivers or streams, especially in vulnerable regions, to stay prepared and be aware of potential dangers.

Monsoon winds from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal are set to strengthen as they enter Pakistan, starting on August 9th. Such winds carry a lot of rain, affecting different places in the country. Therefore, intermittent rainy spells accompanied by strong gusty winds will likely continue until the forecast period ends, i.e., August 12th. Among these areas, Kashmir Neelum Valley Reallot Bagh district receives the highest rainfall during this period.

Wider Rainfall Area Across Provinces Heavy Monsoon Rains

However, this northern eastwards move would cause widespread rains mainly over northeastern parts (Punjab province), where more moisture-laden winds converge than any other place on the landmass between the Tibetan plateau & Indian Ocean at the equator due southward advance made by them.

According to a statement released today by meteorological officials, this weather system will affect not only Punjab but also Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Sindh, and Gilgit-Baltistan. The statement said that strong gusty winds with thundershowers could accompany the rain during these days, from the 9th to the 12th of August. Hence, many parts of the country might experience this type of climate condition at the same time, thus indicating the need for preparedness across different areas within the nation.

Flash Floods Risk In Vulnerable Areas Heavy Monsoon Rains

There is a high chance of flash floods occurring in various parts due to heavy rains predicted by them. These include Murree, Galiyat, Mansehra, Kohistan, Dir, Swat riverside areas up to Shangla and Swabi districts along with Rawalpindi district, including Islamabad Capital Territory, as well eastwards up to eastern Punjab province, which can receive very intense spells associated with these systems, causing rapid rises in stream levels leading on flood situation particularly during peaks hours when people are usually busy working or sleeping unaware about what is happening outside their houses.

Warnings On Urban Flooding And Low-Lying Areas Heavy Monsoon Rains

The meteorological department has also expressed concern about city flooding, particularly over low-lying localities. After persistent heavy rainfall, water tends to accumulate, causing widespread damage in cities, especially those poorly drained. As per the forecast, rainwater could cover roads for some time, thereby disrupting transport services while at the same time damaging structures within various urban centers…

Lahore, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur, Faisalabad, Sahiwal, and Gujrat divisions are expected to be the worst hit.

Areas of the Lahore division, which includes Lahore proper, Gujranwala rRawalkot Sialkot Narrow Kasur Nankana Sahib Hafizabad Sheikhupura Trashand jJhang Chiniot Nawab Shahetc, fall under this category… Also, most parts of Rawalpindi division, like Attock Chakwal Jhelum Gujrat, are prone to receive heavy downpours resulting from slow-moving thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds uprooting trees & light poles followed by localized urban flooding…

PDMA Issues Alerts, Preparations Underway Heavy Monsoon Rains

In anticipation of such an event, PDMA has already issued alerts across the province, directing response organizations through relevant quarters to standby for any eventuality.

 He emphasized the need for vigilance until the Situation returns to normal.

Therefore, emergency services, including commissioners DCS, the Irrigation Department rescue service, the civil defense health education met office, etc., should remain alert.

Monitoring the Situation all the time

PDMA has set up a control room around the clock to monitor the Situation. It will monitor weather changes and ensure that required measures are taken and that time is set to minimize rain damage. The agency requests residents stay updated with weather forecasts and adhere to any warnings or directions from local government units.
