Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are getting ready to meet in what is termed as a do or die debate because it is going to be the first time that the two candidates converge face to face. Given that it has been announced that such debate will take place in Philadelphia, it is plausible that it will attract over tens of millions of viewers. For most, this will act as the first time Harris is seen out of campaign and politician sanctioned events. For the past three and a half years Harris has been the vice president of the us ruling nations. He has had a relative low key and this makes the sudden turn and attachment to Democratic parties candidacy puzzling.
Harris Late Entrance Â
Harris’s emergence as a serious contender this late in the elections is unprecedented in the history of American politics .D4tricionally, candidates take part in primaries to hone their skills and familiarize the voters with themselves. However, Harris did not have to do that this particular time around as he was the one who replaced Joe Biden the running mate in the Democratic ticket. Such was not the same as her earlier quest for the Democrat’s nomination in 2019, where she had to call it quits due to poor campaign strategies.
A New Approach
It is possible that Harris’s low key might in other terms be plus for her. Their campaign emphasized Harris’s humble roots, her professional career in law and her dedication to fundamental rights, especially to reproductive rights. She has however sought to present herself as a new agent of change and a leader of the future despite being part of the current ruling establishment.
Trump’s Approach
The issue that Trump has been focusing on regarding Harris is that she is a radical liberal and tries to back this assertion up with statements she and her team made during the primaries in 2019, like stopping the practice of fracking and providing healthcare for free to all residents. None of them has since been active in such critical rhetoric, having shifted to the center position around the middle of the campaign. This change has enabled her to bypass the intra-party wars and offer more centrist views to the electorate.
Now that Harris is moving to the national arena, her and how often she is able to reach to swing voters or if she is able to take Trump’s attack will determine how successful the campaign will be.
