Greenland Landslide Triggers 9-Day Global Seismic Activity

On September 10, 2023, an enormous landslide in a Greenland fjord was the culprit of an unexpected seismic activity that lasted for a record nine days and shook the world. The landslide caused a mountain’s worth of rock. And a large section of glacial ice to tumble into the waters. Creating a 200-meter-high tsunami wave that created vibrations for nine consecutive days. The wave, which was longitudinally constrained by the thin cross-sectional structure of the fjord, flicked back and forth. Creating energy waves that were picked up by sensors in all parts of the globe.

Landslides Are More Common Because Of Climate Change Greenland

Landslides, according to scientists, are mainly a result of climate alteration. Events such as these are becoming commonplace because the ice sheets that buttress the mountains of Greenland are retreating. The Danish navy made the international team of scientists publish their findings in the journal Science. For example, this is enough to thin out the base glacier of the mountain, which caused it to break down, leading to the demise of cliff retaining.

Landslide Triggered Seismic Activity, Baffled Experts Greenland

Seismic signals, one such other phenomena, when first come across, particularly baffle the scientific community. Dr Stephen Hicks from UCL is of the firm view that it looked nothing like an earthquake and was quite provocatively housed as an “unknown seismic object” in the initial analysis. It came as an orderly recapitulation sign 90 s every nine days. The group finally succeeded in pinpointing the signal to Dickson Fjord, located on the eastern coast of Greenland, after a particularly exhaustive search employing the Danish Navy’s photographs and satellite images.

Unlike typical tsunami waves that travel fast and further to the open sea and disappears, this wave travelled forward and backwards but has not released the energy in the open sea because of the topography of the fjord which retains the energy inside.JButton.

Inscriptions on the Increase in the Arctic

This reinforced the comments of a lead researcher. Dr. Kristian Svennevig of the National Geological Surveys for Denmark. And Greenland (GEUS), that quite alarming climate change events are predicted in the Arctic. Although this specific event occurred in a remote corner of the world. It has depicted the rising threat from the climate. These changes are radical for the country. And such factors can cause global seismic events triggered by climate change. The time now calls for scientists to rethink these circumstances. And determine a workable and viable approach in case of these challenges arising in the future.
