He requested all countries to prohibit these companies from advertising their products. The warning given by the head of the UN comes at a crucial time. The European Union’s climate monitoring service recently announced that this has been the hottest twelve months ever recorded. where the average global temperature was 1.63 degrees Celsius higher than pre-industrial levels.

Appeal to Countries and Media

Additionally, he asked news media organizations and technology companies like Google or Facebook not to accept any form of advertising from such industries since they deeply expose the public to and create awareness of the negative effects caused by these types of energies.

Warning from the World Meteorological Organization

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), under the United Nations, has raised concerns over increasing global warming. WMO predicts an 80% chance that average yearly temperatures will surpass pre-industrial levels within the next five years by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius. World leaders set this target in the Paris Agreement 2015 to prevent worst-case scenarios associated with climate change.

Summary

By banning advertisements on fossil fuels, António Guterres hopes to inspire collective international efforts to fight climate change.
