One of Netflix’s latest international productions to film in Bolton is Fool Me Once — a mystery drama series starring Michelle Keegan and Joanna Lumley. Sarah Lancashire leads the cast of the critically acclaimed BBC drama Happy Valley, which also filmed several scenes across the town centre, including one where a character escaped from court. It has become a key backdrop for TV drama.
Future walking tours
During discussions at a recent council meeting about how to make the most of being named Greater Manchester’s Town of Culture 2020, Councillor Mohammed Ayub announced that work was underway to create TV and film location walks around Bolton town center – which is expected to be launched late summer this year. Visitors can see sites such as the dock where Tommy Lee Royce’s escape scene was shot for Happy Valley.
Star-studded past
Bolton has had many stars pass through over the years with Peaky Blinders, It’s A Sin, Nolly, Brassic, The Ipcress File. The Full Monty, and Red Rose, all using locations within the area — often bringing actors such as Cillian Murphy, Ewan McGregor; Adrian Dunbar or Jodie Whittaker to town for filming.
Economic impact
Over the last four years, filming in Bolton has pumped more than £1m into town hall coffers, according to council chiefs. This financial boost is another sign that the town is becoming a key location within UK film and TV.
