Joe Biden, the president of America, has voiced his lack of confidence in a nonviolent transition of electricity if Donald Trump loses the presidential election in November. In his first interview because dropping out of the race a final month, Biden advised CBS News, “I even have 0 self-assurance.” He said: “[Trump] is serious when he says it. We take him literally but not seriously. He means it. All this stuff about ‘if we lose, it’s going to be a bloodbath’ — that’s what he means.”
Controversial Comment by Trump BidenÂ
Trump’s remark that losing the election would mean “a bloodbath for the country,” made during a conversation about the auto industry in March, drew significant backlash at the time. Democrats quickly seized on their campaign message that Trump poses a threat to democracy. The Biden campaign featured Trump’s “bloodbath” comment in an ad and accused Trump of “applauding and excusing political violence.”
Response From Trump Campaign BidenÂ
The Trump campaign pushed back, arguing that the “bloodbath” comment was specific to the auto industry and had been taken out of context. A fundraising email from Trump’s campaign said his opponents had “viciously” misquoted him. Trump wrote on social media that he was referring to imports allowed by Biden that were hurting the automobile industry.
Historical Context and Concerns
Biden has previously voiced apprehension about whether or not Trump will accept election results. During a June CNN presidential debate—following which Biden endorsed Kamala Harris—moderator Jake Tapper asked both candidates if they would accept the results of the 2024 elections (Harris did so without hesitation). Trump responded: “If it’s a fair and legal and good election? Absolutely” (though he initially dodged the question).
During the 2020 election, after losing to Joe Biden, Donald J Trump repeatedly made baseless claims about election fraud. Supporters stormed the Capitol in January 2021 to prevent certification of election results and echoed his claims about rigged votes.
Current Remarks
In the CBS interview clip released Wednesday, Biden suggested there were ongoing efforts to complicate post-election certification processes. “They’re trying to take away from — look what they’re doing now, in the local election districts where people count the votes,” he said. “Because you can’t win, and you can’t love your country only when you win.”
