Bangladesh Army Chief: Interim Government to Restore Peace

 

In a speech to the nation, Bangladesh Army Chief General Waqar Uz-Zaman announced that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and that an interim government will be formed to restore peace. “We will restore peace to the country. Sheikh Hasina has resigned, and discussions are ongoing to establish an interim government. In his address, “talks have been held with all political parties except the Awami League,” said General Uz Zaman.

No Need for Curfew or Emergency

According to General Uz Zaman, there is no need for curfew or emergency. He intends to meet with the President soon to discuss forming an interim government. And hopes they can solve the issue by tonight. “I will meet with the President soon to discuss establishing an interim government, and I hope we will find a solution by tonight,” he stated.

Appeal for Peace

The Bangladesh Army Chief called on citizens to remain peaceful and avoid violent protests. He urged students to return home safely and assured them that deaths during demonstrations would be investigated. “I appeal to the public that they should stay away from violent protests…students should remain peaceful and return home…I assure you we will investigate deaths that occurred during protests,” added General UZ-Z.

Background of Protests

Protests against the 30% job quota for children of 1971 war veterans sparked unrest in Bangladesh last month. Leading up until over two hundred people died after several days’ worth of demonstrations were held across various regions within the country before the Supreme Court abolished this policy; however, students continued their demand for justice leading towards civil disobedience and Dhaka march calling.
