The way towards the Paralympics did not come easy for Alice Tai. She is now 25 and seems self-reflective and deeply regrets some parts of her life, particularly those around the Rio Paralympics 2016. For instance, after achieving success in the 4x100m medley and winning a gold medal, Tai went on to disclose that this was one of the lows in her life where undiagnosed ADHD affected her a great deal.

She describes how the pressure of competition took the better part of her mental health. Having diagnosed myself: all through the Rio Paralympic games, Tai’s mental health was at its worst. As she battled deep depression, she reached a point where life was no longer appealing to her. The strain that comes with competing at the highest level coupled with an untreated condition was unbearable on her health.

The Importance of Recovery and Support

Tai has an incredible recovery story. She has had major surgeries over the past 3 years and improved her mental health as well. Tai accepted great pride in the roads she has so far but appreciated that her team made her proud.

Battling Physical Restrictions

Tai also had physical defects from birth as she was born with a clubfoot. In the year 2022, Tai underwent a below-the-knee amputation of her right leg, a decision that was both difficult and necessary because of persistent pain. Nevertheless, she was unexhausted in chasing her dreams for the Paralympics.

Setting New Records, Clinching Gold

As she embraced storms in her dispositions, Tai clinched gold well in the S8 100m backstroke at the last Paralympics event where she brought home and set a new record of the games within a minute of 9.06. The victory proved all her effort and determination of the hard work she put on.

She considers that as a participant in the Paralympic Games, she is in a position to address the discriminatory attitudes associated with disability and its disproportionately dim portrayal. Inspiring Confidence in Others Tai wants her achievements as a Paralympian and her public profile to help people with disabilities believe in themselves much more than they do.

Their, ‘It’s possible’, should extend beyond the stratosphere and inspire them to work towards achieving their dreams. Looking Ahead: More Competitions Tai’s odyssey is not finished. There are three other competitions she is going to take part in: Wednesday’s 400m freestyle, Thursday’s 50m freestyle, and Saturday’s 100m butterfly final. It is truly commendable and motivating especially for people like me who also strive to stretch their limitations further.

The willpower and emotion that she possesses and harnesses to become a successful Paralympian is humbling.
