Earth to Gain Temporary Mini-Moon Asteroid 2024 PT5

Brace yourself for an extraordinary phenomenon this fall—Earth is going to acquire a temporary second satellite, scientists report. Earth’s gravitational forces will capture a small asteroid, causing it to orbit the planet for several months before it returns to space.

Take-over of the Mini-Moon Earth

2024 PT5, being small and quite rocky, is poorly predicted to be seen through binoculars and small telescopes. Still, professionals will take pictures of this asteroid as it whizzes past the stars with much bigger professional telescopes.
