Ukraine Military Boost: First F-16 Jets Received – Zelensky

A key milestone for Ukraine Air Force

“We got F16s in Ukraine; we did it,” he said while thanking allies who initially hesitated to offer such sophisticated jets. However, the President noted that many more F-16s were needed to meet the country’s defense needs, even though this is an important upgrade for Ukraine’s air force, which has been highly reliant on old soviet aircraft.

Recent and Upcoming F-16 Deliveries

The exact number of F-16s that have arrived in Ukraine is unknown. Nevertheless, Denmark, the Netherlands, and others promised to supply them. Since August 2023, when US President Joe Biden authorized European allies to send F-16s to Ukraine. They have pledged around sixty-five airplanes.

The Role of F-16s in Ukraine’s Defense Strategy

Since 1978, the older Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon models have been used and are essential for Western air forces. However, more recent models, such as the 2015-released Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightening II, are replacing them. The UK does not have any of these fighters. But it provides long-range Storm Shadow missiles that can be fitted onto them.

Ukraine’s F-16s are expected to operate alongside Western-supplied surface-to-air missile systems like the Patriot and Nasams, already deployed on the ground. These jets, capable of carrying rockets, bombs, and missiles, will theoretically enhance Ukraine’s ability to conduct strikes deep into occupied territories and potentially near the Russian border.

Enhancing Air Defense and Ground Support

The F-16s are also anticipated to aid in defending against Russian glide bombs. These traditional munitions are enhanced with pop-out wings and guidance systems. Allow precision strikes from a distance, similar to the JDAM munitions used by the United States. In March alone, around 3,000 glide bombs were deployed, primarily from Russian Su-34 fighter-bombers.

If Ukraine can safeguard its F-16s, these jets could play a pivotal role in repelling Russian aircraft to prevent them from targeting Ukrainian ground forces with glide bombs. Kyiv had previously suggested housing some F-16s at foreign military bases. This proposal elicited a stern warning from President Vladimir Putin. Who stated that any Western bases storing Ukrainian jets would be considered legitimate military targets.

Potential Impact on the Frontlines

According to some authorities, the F-16s might be capable of providing necessary air support for Ukrainian ground forces that have been repeatedly attacked, especially in the eastern Donbas. Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, said, “But we have already promised that if Western countries send these F-16 planes, they will be shot down.” He also added that these supplies would not significantly influence what is happening at the front.

The arrival of F-16s into Ukraine has been seen as a breakthrough point in its ongoing conflict. With a substantial increase in its air force’s capabilities. The way forward remains tough, and more aircraft and pilots must be acquired. But this is a huge leap toward Ukraine’s fight for self-determination and resistance against Russian aggression.
